When is the best time to charter a yacht in Italy? The short answer is June and September: warm sea, long days and quieter anchorages. But every month from May to October has something to offer, and the right choice also depends on where you want to go. Here is our month-by-month guide, based on many summers spent between Sicily, the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia.

The Italian charter season at a glance

The yacht charter season in Italy runs from May to October. High season is July and August, when the weather is most stable but harbours, beach clubs and anchorages are at their busiest. The shoulder months – May, June, September and October – are increasingly popular with experienced guests who prefer space and calm.

May: green islands and empty bays

Days are already long and sunny, the islands are still green and the anchorages are almost empty. The sea is still fresh for swimming, so May is ideal for guests who love food, culture and walking ashore – the Amalfi Coast and Capri are at their best before the summer crowds.

June: the sweet spot

Warm sea, the longest days of the year and harbours not yet full. June is perfect for almost every destination, from the Aeolian Islands to the Costa Smeralda. Availability is still good, but the best yachts are often booked months in advance.

July: the start of high season

Hot, stable weather and the liveliest atmosphere: beach clubs, events and evenings ashore. Panarea, Capri and Porto Cervo are in full swing. Book early and reserve berths in advance for the most famous harbours.

August: peak season

The busiest month of the year, especially around Ferragosto on 15 August, when Italians take their holidays and the sea is full of boats. Prices for berths are at their highest and popular bays are crowded. A private yacht with an experienced captain and a chase boat is the best way to enjoy August while avoiding the crowds.

September: the insider’s favourite

For many guests, the best month of all. The sea is at its warmest after the summer, the light is softer, the crowds have gone and restaurants are relaxed. It is also the month of great sailing events such as the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo.

October: late summer in the south

In the north the season is closing, but in the south it is still summer. Sicily and the Aeolian Islands often enjoy warm days and swimmable sea well into October – perfect for a quiet autumn charter.

When to book

For July and August, we recommend booking six to nine months ahead – many owners already plan their summer in winter. For June and September, three to six months is usually enough. Last-minute charters are possible, but the choice of yachts is limited.

Maggio: isole verdi e baie vuote

Luglio: inizia l’alta stagione
