Few countries offer as much from the sea as Italy: thousands of kilometres of coastline, volcanic islands, glamorous harbours, ancient towns and some of the best food in the world, all within a few hours of cruising. A luxury yacht charter in Italy is the most private and comfortable way to experience it. This guide explains where to go, which yacht to choose, how a crewed charter works and how to plan it with Navawave, an Italian charter company based between Milan and Sicily.

The best destinations for a yacht charter in Italy

Which yacht to choose

Motor yachts from 20 to 40 metres are the most popular choice in Italy: fast enough to change island every day, with spacious decks and full crew. Superyachts over 40 metres add more guests, a larger crew, a chef and water toys. Sailing yachts and catamarans offer a slower, quieter experience, while day boats are perfect for a single day at sea. A dedicated chase boat gives guests total freedom to go ashore while the yacht stays at anchor. Our own motor yacht Sea Sons, a 22-metre Ferretti 700, and our chase boat Sea Toy are complemented by a curated network of yachts across the Mediterranean – see the fleet.

How a crewed yacht charter works

A crewed charter is usually booked by the week and confirmed with a charter agreement. The charter fee covers the yacht and crew; on top of it come VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance), an amount paid in advance to cover fuel, food, drinks and port fees, which the captain accounts for at the end of the trip. The crew – captain, sailors and, on larger yachts, chef and stewardess – takes care of navigation, meals and service, so guests only have to enjoy the sea.

When to charter a yacht in Italy

The season runs from May to October. June and September offer the best balance of warm sea and quieter anchorages; July and August are the liveliest months. See our month-by-month guide to the best time to charter a yacht in Italy.
