Porto Cervo is the most famous name on the Costa Smeralda — and with good reason. Its marina is one of the most exclusive in the world, its restaurants draw an international clientele, and its boutiques line stone streets that feel like a stage set for summer elegance. But the real Costa Smeralda — the one that rewards those who explore by yacht — begins where Porto Cervo ends. Beyond the famous marina lie kilometres of coastline that remain wild, quiet, and extraordinarily beautiful.
The Anchorages
Capriccioli is perhaps the most beautiful bay on the entire Costa Smeralda — a wide, shallow bay with pale granite rocks and water that turns from turquoise to deep blue as the depth increases. In June it is often deserted. In August it fills quickly, but still retains a wild quality that Porto Cervo can never offer. The Maddalena Archipelago, just north of the Costa Smeralda, is a world apart. Seventeen islands and dozens of smaller islets form a natural marine park where the water colour defies description. Anchoring in the channels between Maddalena and Caprera, with the wind picking up in the afternoon and the scent of pine coming off the hillsides, is one of the great pleasures of Mediterranean sailing.

Porto Cervo: The Social Hub
For all its exclusivity, Porto Cervo rewards those who know how to use it. Arriving by tender in the early evening, taking an aperitivo at the piazzetta, watching the procession of yachts come in — this is a ritual that belongs to the Mediterranean summer and should be experienced at least once. The key is knowing when to be there and when to leave. The Navawave approach is to use Porto Cervo as a base for an evening or two, and then move — to Capriccioli, to Liscia Ruja, to the channels of Maddalena — for the days in between.
When to Visit
June and September offer the Costa Smeralda at its best — warm water, emptier bays, and a more relaxed atmosphere. July and August are when the marina fills and the social calendar reaches its peak. Both have their appeal; the choice depends on what kind of experience you are seeking.
